Less than one month after the passage of Hurricane Beryl, Grenlec is pleased to report that restoration of the electrical structure on mainland Grenada is 99.8% complete. This means that fewer than 65 customers are still without electricity. Particularly in the north of the island, some customers are not yet able to receive supply because of damage to their property.
Restoration work is also underway in Carriacou and Petite Martinique, which sustained severe damage. Three hundred customers in Carriacou have already been connected, many in the Town of Hillsborough with work ongoing on the primary lines extending north, east and south of the Beausejour Power Plant.
On Petite Martinique a smaller generator is currently being utilised to provide power to streetlights and ten customers. Plans are being made to facilitate crews travelling to Petite Martinique for a day at a time.
Grenlec’s Transmission and Distribution crews on all three islands as well as supporting teams have been working tirelessly to restore electricity to all customers in the shortest possible time. Grenlec has also sent additional equipment and supplies to Carriacou to ensure material is available to the crews.
The Grenlec Team is exceedingly pleased to have the support of 15 crew members from LUCELEC, DOMLEC and Barbados Light & Power. These teams are currently assisting with restoration work in Carriacou. Over the coming weekend, a team of 18 people and specialised vehicles and equipment are expected from neighbouring T&Tech in Trinidad.
Clive Hosten, Acting General Manager of Grenlec, says the Grenlec Team welcomes this assistance which is organised by the regional grouping of Caribbean utilities, CARILEC. “Our Grenlec crews have assisted with disaster restoration on many different islands and after Hurricane Ivan we received sterling support through this programme. We are again happy to welcome the teams of volunteers and thank the utilities for the experienced team members, who are accelerating the pace of restoration.”
Even with the external support, Grenlec estimates complete restoration of service In Carriacou could take three or four months.
The Grenlec Team is also extending its appreciation to customers for their patience and cooperation during this challenging time.
The Company is assuring customers that it is making every effort to restore electricity and to strengthen resilience of the electricity system.
