Advancing the MBIA Renewable Energy Project

The Maurice Bishop International Airport Renewable Energy Project is a utility-scale solar initiative designed to integrate more renewable energy into the national electricity system.

The work to be executed by Grenlec, includes the development of transmission infrastructure, a substation, and Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) to support the safe and reliable integration of the solar farm. An independent power producer procured by the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) will be responsible for the development of the solar farm.

Funding for the Grenlec project activities:

The World Bank will provide a subsidiary loan for USD $18.5M, to enable critical grid upgrades required to interconnect the solar photovoltaic farm at the airport. An additional USD $6.0M loan and USD $3.0M grant will also be provided by the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) to fund half the cost of the BESS.
