Building the Next Generation of Female Cricketers: New Development Programme Launched by Grenada Cricket Association, Grenlec and Cricket West Indies
The Grenada Cricket Association has officially launched its Girls’ Cricket Development Programme in association with Grenada Electricity Services Ltd. And Cricket West Indies, marking a significant step in strengthening structured opportunities for young women in the sport.
The programme is designed to enhance the development pathway for women’s cricket by providing consistent coaching, competitive exposure and mentorship at the school level. It forms part of the Association’s broader strategy to build depth, improve standards and foster long-term growth in the women’s game.
Norman Gilbert, President of the Grenada Cricket Association, described the programme as strategically important.
“This inaugural activity is going to play a significant part in the development of women’s cricket in Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique. In fact, for the very first time, we have a programme that is specifically designed for women’s development only.”
Dwain Gill, High Performance Manager for Cricket West Indies, welcomed the partnership with the Grenada Cricket Association and Grenlec, noting that collaboration between corporate and sporting organisations is essential to expanding access and ensuring programmes are delivered with quality and consistency.
“We need more corporate citizens to step forward and support women’s cricket. Your investment is making a tangible difference.”
The partners also recognised the contributions of the Ministries of Sport and Education, participating schools, programme administrators, coaches and parents, whose involvement ensures that the initiative supports athletic performance as well as personal growth and leadership development.
The ambassadors for the programme, Afy Fletcher, and Junior Murray were joined by other members of the Women’s Team West Indies and male and female Grenadian cricket legends to salute and support the more than 150 girls from primary and secondary schools throughout our Tri-Island state.
Encouraging the programme participants to reach even beyond her achievements, Fletcher urged, “This programme is more than cricket. It is about building strong, confident young women for Grenada. Dream big. Train hard. Support each other and remember — your journey begins right here.”
Through structured training and competitive opportunities, the Girls’ Cricket Power Play Programme is expected to play a key role in advancing women’s cricket.
